CAP asks for ban on diapers with harmful substances
PENANG: Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) called on the authorities to ban diapers found with harmful substances that could make babies suffer from infertility and cancer later in life.
Its president S.M. Mohamed Idris said some babies also suffered from rashes, asthma and other health complications because of the toxic effects.
“Diapers laced with harmful substances that pose a threat to babies’ health should be removed from the market.
“We will be writing to the Health Ministry, highlighting our grave concerns,” he told a press conference on Wednesday.
Mohamed Idris said the government should take proactive measures to remove harmful diapers from the market.
Materials used in making diapers, include polyethylene film, polyester, polypropylene, pulp fluff from chlorine treated wood pulp, sodium polyacrylate and chemicals, such as tributylin, he said.
“These substances have been reported to cause severe skin irritation, bleeding from perineum and scrotal tissue, fever, vomiting and staphylococcus infections in babies.
“Babies are prone to chemical injuries because their thin skins readily absorb chemicals,” he said.
